Kissimmee Travel Guide

Kissimmee is where most park visitors sleep and almost none of them look around. That is a mistake — it has the lakes, the marshes, the airboats and some of the best value eating in Central Florida.

Where Kissimmee sits

Kissimmee sits directly south of the Disney parks along US-192, which makes it the practical base for most park holidays — you are often closer to the Magic Kingdom gates than guests staying in official Disney hotels. The eastern end, nearer Medieval Times and the 192 marker system, holds the largest concentration of resort communities and villas. Head west and the road runs toward Celebration and the ChampionsGate area on the Davenport border; head into old Kissimmee and you reach the historic downtown on the shores of Lake Tohopekaliga. It is unglamorous in places, but the trade is more house for your money and a shorter park run than almost anywhere else.

Old Town and the strip

US-192 — 'the strip' — is Kissimmee's spine and its guilty pleasure. Old Town is a walkable retro attraction with a permanent classic-car scene, a Ferris wheel and go-karts, free to wander and good for an easy evening. Along the rest of the strip you will find themed mini-golf, the Fun Spot amusement park, dinner shows like Medieval Times, and every chain restaurant you could name. It is not subtle, but with kids it is genuinely fun and far cheaper than a park day. The marker-number system along 192 is how locals give directions — note the nearest marker to your villa and navigation gets a lot easier.

The lakes and the wildlife

Away from the neon, Kissimmee is lake country. Lake Tohopekaliga ('Lake Toho') is one of the best bass-fishing lakes in the country and a genuinely wild place — bald eagles, sandhill cranes and alligators are common sights. Airboat operators on the lake's edge run tours into the marshes that put you nose-to-nose with Florida as it looked before the parks. The Kissimmee Lakefront Park downtown is a pleasant, free spot for a picnic and a playground with real water views. It is the side of the area most park visitors never notice, and it is worth half a day.

Eating well for less

Kissimmee eats better and cheaper than the tourist strip suggests once you know where to look. The Vietnamese and Latin American restaurants scattered along 192 and into the residential streets are where locals actually eat — pho, Puerto Rican mofongo, Colombian bakeries. Celebration, a few minutes west, offers a prettier, pricier sit-down scene around its lakeside downtown. For groups self-catering, the Publix supermarkets are excellent and everywhere; a single big shop plus a villa kitchen will halve your food bill versus eating out. Save the character dining for one memorable night in the parks rather than every evening.

Day trips

Kissimmee's position makes it a strong launch pad. The Disney and Universal parks are the obvious 15–25 minute run. Beyond them, the Space Coast and Cocoa Beach are about an hour east for a day on the Atlantic or a Kennedy Space Center visit. Bok Tower Gardens near Lake Wales, forty minutes south, is a quiet, beautiful contrast to the parks. Gatorland — half zoo, half old-Florida roadside attraction — sits just up the road toward Orlando. And the Gulf beaches around Tampa and Clearwater, roughly ninety minutes west, reward the drive with calmer, whiter sand than the Atlantic side.
